Description

To connect a business's network (or “intranet”) to the Internet, a TCP/IP router is required. This page compares features of several hardware and software routers. The routers reviewed here generally connect an Ethernet network to the Internet via one or more analog (eg 56k) modems.

Internet Routing

Read an introduction to internet routing.

NAT DNS

These routers use NAT (Network Address Translation) to make multiple network machines appear to the Internet as one IP address. This can create special requirements for the configuration of your domain name servers.

56k modems only

We have not reviewed other communication methods such as ISDN, cable modem or ADSL since they are not available or economical for most of our clients.

T&B Internet
Services

T&B provides a range of Internet services, aimed at enabling businesses with little in house expertise to host their own permanent Internet connection and servers.

“Simplest router I've seen - no hub, one serial port, no built-in modem... built-in web ... configuration, and is a DHCP server. Pretty flexible configuration (secondary number when the first is busy, multiple DNS, etc.). Going price is about $150-$180.”
